A hybrid system puts a cold-climate heat pump and the existing oil boiler or propane furnace on one control, so the house runs on whichever is the better answer that hour. The heat pump carries almost the whole heating season. The fuel-fired equipment stays for the coldest nights and for the week the power is out.

On delivered oil or propane the heat pump usually stays the cheaper machine much further down the thermometer than people expect.
